The Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is the biggest fixture on the South African soccer calendar, and it is one of the most searched matches of the year. This guide explains how the match works from a betting point of view: which markets are usually offered, how to read decimal odds and the bookmaker’s margin, and what to check before you place a bet. It does not predict results. Nobody can, and a derby is a good reminder of why.

What is the Soweto Derby?
The Soweto Derby is the league fixture between the two biggest clubs in South African soccer. Both were born in Soweto, both carry enormous national followings, and the match regularly fills FNB Stadium. Because the two clubs meet twice in a Betway Premiership season, there are two derby weeks a year, and each one brings a surge of interest in team news, line-ups and odds.
The latest derby: Pirates 2–1 Chiefs
The first derby of the 2026/27 season was played on 31 October 2026 at FNB Stadium. Yanela Mbuthuma put Orlando Pirates ahead in the 24th minute and Pule Mmodi levelled for Kaizer Chiefs in the 30th, so the sides went into half-time at 1–1. Tshepang Moremi scored the winner for Pirates early in the second half, and the match finished 2–1.
A single scoreline says little about the next meeting. Squads change, players are injured or suspended, and managers set up differently from one derby to the next. Treat results as background, not as a promise.
Soweto Derby betting markets explained
At 10bet, soccer matches like the derby are offered as fixed-odds bets: the odds are set when you place the bet and do not change afterwards. Which markets appear on a given match can vary, but these are the ones most people look for:
| Market | What it means |
|---|---|
| Match result (1X2) | Pick Pirates to win, a draw, or Chiefs to win after 90 minutes. Extra time does not count. |
| Double chance | Covers two of the three results at once, for example Pirates or draw. Lower odds, because you are covered twice. |
| Draw no bet | Back one team to win. If the match is drawn, your stake is returned. |
| Both teams to score | Yes if each side scores at least once, no if one side fails to score. |
| Total goals (over/under) | Bet on whether the number of goals will be above or below a set line, such as 2.5. |
| Goalscorer markets | First, last or anytime goalscorer. These carry higher odds because they are harder to get right. |
| Correct score | Pick the exact final score. High odds, and rarely right. |
| Bet builder | Combine several selections from the same match into one bet. Every selection must win. |
Our soccer betting guide for South Africa covers these markets in more detail, and the Betway Premiership page shows what is currently on the board.
How to read derby odds and the bookmaker’s margin
Odds in South Africa are shown in decimal format. Your return is your stake multiplied by the odds, and that includes your stake. A R100 bet at 2.40 returns R240 if it wins, which is R140 profit.
Odds also tell you the probability the bookmaker is implying. Divide 1 by the decimal odds: 1 ÷ 2.40 is about 41.7%. Here is an illustrative match-result market. These are example numbers, not real odds:
| Outcome | Example odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | 2.40 | 41.7% |
| Draw | 3.10 | 32.3% |
| Away win | 3.00 | 33.3% |
| Total | 107.3% |
The three probabilities add up to more than 100%. The extra 7.3% is the bookmaker’s margin, which is how a bookmaker earns its living. Comparing the total across markets is a simple way to see where the margin is thinner, and it is a good habit on any match, not just a derby.
Derby week: what to check before you bet
- Team news and suspensions. Derbies are physical, and cards can rule players out of the next match. Look at who is available before you decide.
- Confirmed line-ups. Official line-ups usually appear around an hour before kick-off. A key player missing can change a market.
- Recent form, with care. Form is a useful signal but derbies are emotional matches, and many fans and analysts treat them as less predictable than ordinary league games.
- Your own limits. Decide your stake before the match, stick to it, and do not chase losses. Big matches make it easy to bet more than you planned.
