Not to be confused with the Golden Boot winner, the recipient of the Golden Ball is awarded to the best player of the World Cup. While goals inevitably change games and it’s likely that a top scorer will secure the Golden Ball, history has shown that it’s not always the case.

Germany’s goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won it in 2002, while Luka Modric snapped it up in 2018, with Lionel Messi deservedly scooping the Golden Ball four years ago. Since the award is voted for from a shortlist of players created by the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG), it’s an opportunity to back someone with significant value.

How Golden Ball 2026 works?

The panel will look for a player that dictates the ‘story’ of the World Cup. One of the key points is for the team to reach the latter stages of the competition. Other than that, they will also look at:

• Creativity: Magic in the final 3rd and breaking down stubborn defences.

• Leadership: Players who often drive their team forward, especially under difficult circumstances. Not necessarily the captain of the team, such as England’s Declan Rice.

• Moments that matter: Scoring a goal or grabbing a crucial assist to put one’s team into the next round will always rank high in the eyes of the judging panel.

• Consistency: Delivering the same level of performance across the competition.

Favourites for Golden Ball 2026 winner: Player analysis

A quick look across the world’s best teams will show us several key players who can put their hands up for the award. We’ll unpack some of the key favourites for the 2026 World Cup.

Odds are correct at the time of publishing and subject to change.

Harry Kane

His move to Germany turned out to be a fruitful one, as he’s won trophies and is now in line for the Balon d’Or. Kane is the captain of a talented England side, and he will be the focal point of their attack. He delivered 55 goals for Bayern Munich in the season gone by, so no doubt he will be crucial for the Three Lions.

With Thomas Tuchel asking Kane to drop deep and orchestrate the attack, he will be one of the names on the media’s list for the award should England progress far.

Lamine Yamal

Still a teenager, but Yamal has been crucial for Barcelona. He’s coming off another league triumph with the Catalan club. However, he is nursing an injury and could only be available toward the end of the group stage. Still, his 16 goals and 11 assists for Barca indicates that he will be a threat, perhaps later in the tournament. If Yamal can help Spain through the knockout stages, his ‘prodigy’ story will be difficult to ignore.

Kylian Mbappe

The French forward put in a scintillating display in the 2022 World Cup final. Unfortunately, he was upstaged by one Lionel Messi. Mbappe netted 40 goals in La Liga and the Champions League for Real Madrid last term. He’s also scored 12 goals in 14 World Cup matches, and if he can maintain that kind of impact, France are bound to live up to their ‘favourites’ tag in North America. If Les Bleus can pull off another triumph come July, Mbappe will be a frontrunner for the 2026 Golden Ball.

Outsider value picks for the 2026 Golden Ball

The long picks have surprised the world before. Diego Forlan comes to mind when the World Cup was held in Mzansi. The Uruguayan made a huge impression as he quickly fell in love with the ‘Jabulani’ ball. Despite his team finishing fourth, he led them to their first semi-final in 40 years. Similar stories could unfold in this edition, and these are our value picks for the 2026 Golden Ball winner.

Bruno Fernandes – 21.00 to win the 2026 Golden Ball

In terms of value, Bruno offers much of it, considering the season he’s just come out of. The Manchester United creator just broke the record for the number of assists in a single Premier League campaign. Fernandez will be freer with the likes of Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Bernardo Silva behind him, giving him freedom to operate where it matters. Portugal’s chances of reaching the last stages will hinge on how influential he is along with one Cristiano Ronaldo.

Declan Rice – 21.00 to win the 2026 Golden Ball

Since his big money move from West Ham United to Arsenal, Rice has consistently delivered top-notch performances for the Gunners. In fact, Gooners around the world often serenade him with the “we bought him half price” tune. This term, he was central to Mikel Arteta’s men winning the Premier League after 22 years and making it to the Champions League final. If Thomas Tuchel uses his brilliant dead ball delivery, Rice could be as crucial as Kane is to the English charge.

Erling Haaland – 26.00 to win the 2026 Golden Ball

The guy doesn’t need much of an introduction, but he’s playing in a team that haven’t been a superpower. Norway can get out of their group, and they will rely on Haaland’s prowess in front of goal. He also thrives when he has Martin Odegaard in the 10 behind him. If the 2 can click for the national team, we expect the Manchester City man to get in among the goals at the World Cup. If the Scandinavians can get further into the competition, Haaland is a worthy name to back for the Golden Ball.

Achraf Hakimi – 50.00 to win the 2026 Golden Ball

The Paris Saint-Germain right-back was highly influential in Morocco’s semi-final charge 4 years ago. He had another impressive campaign with the European champions, bagging 6 assists in a dozen Champions League matches. Hakimi is a playmaker disguised as a defender, and he has the potential to break the positional tradition and win the award, should the Atlas Lions progress past the Round of 32.

Bukayo Saka – 50.00 to win the 2026 Golden Ball

Saka’s season has been blighted by injury, but he appeared to be creeping back to his best during the latter stages of Arsenal’s campaign. England fans will hope that he’s raring to go again on the international stage. It’s easy to forget that Saka is still just 24-years-old, with the amount of soccer that he’s played. He’s also a penalty beast and uses his wicked left foot perfectly for in swinging corners. Tuchel will no doubt use him from the start, and if he gets going, he could be the one to snatch the Golden Ball this time around.
